What to do when a tooth comes out of the socket due to trauma?

It is common that in many kinds of trauma to the face there may be avulsion of the tooth.
Avulsion is the complete displacement of the tooth out of its socket due to some kind of trauma.
One has to know what to do immediately
Immediate placement of the avulsed tooth into the socket is recommended but it may always not be possible, for various reasons like:
1.There might be more serious injuries requiring immediate attention
2.A person may be scared of handling bleeding
3.If multiple teeth are lost one may not know which tooth belongs to which socket
4.Pain may not allow you to place the tooth back
5.Sometimes the tooth may have got dirty with soil or mud and one may not think it’s the right thing to do
6.Or you may be unaware of what to do

So one needs to know what to do in case of an emergency like this.

1.Do not panic
2.Take the tooth and place it in milk
3.It may be better if you can keep the tooth under your tongue until you reach the dentist
4.Do not try to scrub the tooth surface it may only be rinsed gently but repeatedly in saline
5.You can rinse your mouth
Please see a dentist at the earliest

What does the dentist do?

You may need to get the tooth reimplanted within a maximum of 1 hr to have a good prognosis for the tooth. The earlier the better.
The dentist will
1.Evaluate the tooth
2.Rinse it well in saline but will not damage the periodontal ligament tissue attached to the root surface
3.Clean the socket and under local anesthesia reimplant the tooth back into the socket
4.Splinting of teeth together will be required for a period of 2-3 weeks
5.Followed by which a root canal treatment of the tooth would be done and the tooth capped.

When a tooth is protected well and reimplanted at the shortest possible time, the prognosis of the tooth is good.
However sometimes the socket wall itself may be damaged not allowing successful reimplantation of the tooth.

If the milk tooth gets avulsed the tooth is not reimplanted as it may damage the permanent tooth bud. The process of reimplantation is only done for permanent teeth. The prognosis of reimplanted tooth is very variable ranging from 10-90% success rate depending on many factors.

Some teeth undergo root resorption and become mobile and rejected by the body whereas others get ankylosed or get attached to the bone surface.
