The first permanent tooth will erupt in your childs mouth by about 6 years of age. Between 6 years and 13 years the child will have some permanent and some milk teeth. By 13 years and over all permanent teeth are seen in the oral cavity.
As the milk teeth are exfoliated and permanent teeth replace them there could be various changes in how the child’s teeth look like and this may make the parents anxious.
7 years of age is the right time to meet an orthodontist
Who have problems with their jaws which could be due to heredity or otherwise. The correction of the bones (maxilla and mandible) can happen only during the growth period of an individual. Hence if the patient sees the orthodontist during the growth period (under 12-13 years) the bone issues can be dealt with. If the child consults the orthodontist after this period then surgery becomes an inevitable option for correction.
Many children also have habits like thumb sucking which can cause problems with alignment of teeth. And correction of these also needs to be done as early as possible once the permanent teeth start showing.
However if the problem is only with the alignment of teeth we need to wait for all permanent teeth to erupt and then only correct them.
You need to be sure that all milk teeth are doing well and are not carious. If there is decay you need to get the teeth filled and save the tooth. If for some reason the child looses a milk tooth then it is absolutely mandatory to replace the missing tooth with a space maintainer. As the loss of a milk tooth will push the erupting tooth ahead and will eventually cause loss of space for the permanent successor tooth and hence alignment problems.
So to be on the safer side (so that you are not late) get your child examined by an orthodontist at 7 years of age.
