What is dental caries:
Dental caries or tooth decay is a process of acid demineralization of the tooth.
Which are the bacteria that cause cavities?
Basically Streptococcus Mutans and Lactobacilli are the bacteria involved in formation of cavities.
How are dental cavities formed?
There are bacteria present in the mouth on the salivary biofilm called dental plaque formed on the teeth. When there is sugary food deposit on the teeth these bacteria break down sucrose to form acids. The acid thus produced will demineralise the tooth to form cavities.
How do you get to know that you have tooth decay?
One will see a dark brown to black colored spot on the tooth once a cavity sets in. The discoloration will turn into a hole in some time. A person may not experience pain or sensitivity until the cavity reaches deep into the second layer of the tooth called dentin. If one continues to ignore the sensitivity the cavity penetrates deeper and reaches the pulp which is the inner most layer of the tooth having nerves and vessels. Then a regular filling will not do and another procedure called root canal treatment may be indicated.
How do you treat dental decay:
The incipient lesions can be excavated and a regular filling with composite or cement is done. When the cavity gets deeper and reaches close to pulp then a different kind of filling may be required. If the cavity reaches pulp then a regular filling will not do and another procedure called root canal treatment is done to save the tooth.
How to prevent cavities:
You can prevent caries from developing by
-
Regularly brushing your teeth twice a day
-
Flossing your teeth once every day at night
-
Rinsing your mouth after every meal
-
Eating a healthy diet
It is required that you make a regular 6 monthly visit to the dentist. If there is any incipient lesion it can be identified and the problem fixed at the earliest so that it will not trouble you.
Dental treatment is not expensive but neglect is.
